On Friday, 23 May 2025 I hosted the fifth annual Spring Jam Recital on my front porch.  It is one of two front porch recitals I host each year, the other being the Spooktacular in October.

This year’s Spring Jam featured a fairly intimate crowd, with seven students in total performing, as well as my buddy John playing some pre-recital tunes.  I think it was slightly larger than last year’s, especially as one little girl brought not only her parents and brother, but a number of extended family members as well.  One of the parents, a local restauranteur, brought delicious wings from one of her establishments.

As usual, my Mom made her famous Rotel dip, this time with sausage added.  My Dad and my younger brother grilled up some all-beef hot dogs, and Dr. Fiancée helped with selling t-shirts and getting the table set with my mother.  My niece and one of my nephews played, too; it’s always fun having a family get-together mixed in with the recital.

TBT^4: Summertime Schedule Begins

Well, here we are again—another summer vacation, which means another school year in the books.  This past academic year was not nearly as taxing as the one that came before, but I am always amazed by how exhausting teaching can be, even though I have lived it for over fifteen years now.  March through May are always a mad dash, and then—as I have noted many times before—everything just… stops.

Not precisely, though.  I’ll do my annual Minecraft Camp next week.  Dr. Fiancée and I are also in the depths of wedding planning.  And I am looking forward to my annual visit to Indianapolis to see my older brother.

Every year I think about what I will do with the time, and every year I find that I fail to meet the breadth of my ambitions.  I do want to put in some more work on Offensive Poems: With Pictures, as I think that could be a fun project and might actually move some copies.  Otherwise, I’ll do some more digital composing.

One thing I am looking forward to is the return of the afternoon nap.  Goodness, how I love a good siesta!

French Independence in Sid Meier’s Colonization

Back in January 2025 I subjected the longsuffering Dr. Fiancée (then still Dr. Girlfriend) to an excited and probably tedious explanation of Sid Meier’s Colonization, the game that was probably most responsible for me becoming a history teacher.  Since then, I started a few games, but never finished them.  Like many Civ and Civ-adjacent games, Colonization drags a bit in the middle, becoming at times a laborious economic management sim (which, essentially, is what the game is).

However, the end of the game is exciting, and is essentially an entirely different game from the rest.  The goal is to declare independence from your mother country, which becomes possible only after building up a self-sufficient economy in the New World.  A major part of that economy is the ability to produce massive amounts of muskets and horses, as well as populating your colonies with immigrants and natural-born settlers who will use those muskets.

Late Monday night—far too late to be up before heading to work—I finished up a game as New France, successfully gaining independence from the mother country after a tough fight for independence.

Happy Memorial Day 2025!

In time-honored TPP tradition, I take Memorial Day off from writing movie reviews (indeed, today’s post is almost verbatim last year’s post).  Memorial Day marks the last day off from work until summer break, which literally starts in about three days for yours portly.  It makes the day off somewhat superfluous, but, really, the next two or three days of work will be largely superfluous, too.  We’ll finalize grades for our classes by department, and by the time you’re reading this brief post, I should be done with report card comments).

Lazy Sunday CCCX: MP3 Players

Apparently, yours portly has MP3 players strewn about—well, at least two.  I’m wondering if I might stumble into a third.  At one point, I had an MP3 player with a whopping 64 MB of storage space.  I have no idea where that one is now, but I remember listening to it on repeat my freshman year of college to drown out the sound of reruns of The Golden Girls that my roommate would listen to to fall asleep at night (he also recited the dialogue in his sleep).  I could squeeze maybe eighteen songs on there, depending on the bit-rate of the MP3s, and I would periodically trade songs out for new ones.

But I digress.  Here are some recent pieces on the two MP3 players I do have in my possession (and which I am selling—here and here):

Today is another graduation, which means it’s time for yours portly to dish out some more dubious graduation day wisdom.  The older I get, the more I realize that the only certainty we can have is found in Jesus Christ.  Human frailty is such that, no matter how hard any of us try, we are going to let even people we love down—and they’ll let us down (don’t worry, no one I love has let me down lately—ha!—and I hope I haven’t done the same, I’m just noting a general Truth).  Perhaps that is the greatest wisdom I have to offer, younglings:  put your trust and faith in the Lord.

But besides the preachy stuff, what about more spicy nuggets of enlightenment?  Come, gather at my feet, and let me teach you.

Gig Day XI: Spring Jam V

Tonight is the Spring Jam, one of the two recitals I host on my front porch every year (the other is the Spooktacular, which is in late October).  I’m looking forward to an evening of music, merriment, and hot dogs.

This year marks the fifth Spring Jam, which has become a popular event with my private music students.  These front porch concerts started out as a way for my buddy John and me to play gigs during The Age of The Virus, when nobody was open for live music.  I realized that if I wanted to play in front of a live audience, I’d have to circumvent the hysteria and become the venue and talent.

TBT^4: Zelda Game & Watch

On 2 May 2022 I purchased the legendary Zelda Game & Watch by Nintendo (that link is an Amazon Affiliate link, which means I receive a portion of any purchases made through that link, at no additional cost to you).  It’s a small, handheld device that has the first Zelda games, as well as the Gameboy’s classic Link’s Awakening.  It also functions as a clock, which is kind of cool, too.

I wrote a very long post about the unit back on 31 May 2022, lovingly detailing the wild nostalgia trip the unit sparked.  Honestly, 2022 seems like the distant past, and it was only three years ago!  Regardless, I still have the unit, and while I am clearing out a lot of my old technology, I don’t have any immediate plans to sell this bad boy.

If you’re a gamer and you appreciate the classic Zelda games, I highly recommend you grab the unit.  It’s currently $53.93 on Amazon (again, that’s an affiliate link), but it’s worth every penny.  Considering most video games now are at least $60 brand new, that’s a steal.
