This week I’m featuring one of the more unusual tracks from The Galactic Menagerie.  It’s not as unorthodox as some of my compositions, but it’s a bit of an odd fit for an album ostensibly about animals.

I came up with the idea for the piece—“Morning Moon Sliver”—after snapping this picture one morning while walking Murphy:

That inspired this folksy little piece; when I listen to it, I hear the lyrics “Morning Moon Sliver/Shine down on me!” in my head.

This week’s selection for Open Mic Adventures is something of a novelty—like most of my compositions, admittedly.  I wrote this piece for a reason, though:  I wanted to have a piece that would always play first on my Apple Music playlist when I get into the car.

You see, my “favorites” on Apple Music play in alphabetic order (by title) whenever I plug my phone into my car’s sound system.  I figured if I wrote a piece that alphabetically had to come before everything else, it would play every time I go anywhere, and I could collect some additional royalties.  I also calculated that if a few other people added the piece to their favorite playlists, the same thing might happen.

Well, I haven’t quite tired of hearing this piece yet, but it does, indeed, play every time I get into the car, so it already has far more plays than most of my pieces do upon release.

Is it any good?  Well, give “Aardvark” a listen and decide for yourself.

With the release of The Galactic Menagerie last week, I’m really digging into the pieces from the album.  I compose these collections so quickly—and often have already started on another album by the time one releases—that I sometimes forget what the compositions sound like!

That’s not the case with today’s piece.  It’s weird little melody that, honestly, makes me a little anxious when I hear it.  That is, perhaps, appropriate:  it’s about a crafty species of underground oddballs and their doubtlessly wicked machinations.

Yours portly is back to the grind today, and slowly getting back into my routine.  I’ve been woefully negligent of the blog, but hope to get back into the groove soon.  I’ve been writing that for what feels like a week, but maybe it will become true—finally!

I recently finished working on a new album, which will be something of a cosmic zoological exploration.  I’m calling it The Galactic Menagerie, and it releases on Friday, 7 March 2025, so mark your calendars.
