The long retrospective of the worst films ever is nearly over, which means after over six months of self-torture, we’ll finally be through rehashing these wretched films.
My #4, #3, and #2 picks are particularly accursed, and definitely deserve their spots so close to #1:
- “Monday Morning Movie Review: Portly’s Top Ten Worst Films: #4: The Wicker Man (2006)” – The Wicker Man (2006), the abysmal remake of the 1973 classic, takes all of the great elements of the original and tosses them. Even Nicolas Cage can’t save this script.
- “Monday Morning Movie Review: Portly’s Top Ten Worst Films: #3: Captain Marvel (2019)” – A mediocre Marvel film that made itself worse thanks to its title character’s complete lack of struggle—much like the actress portraying the hero—and the meta-narrative of grrrrrrlpwwwwrrrr surrounding it, Captain Marvel (2019) threw a heavy-handed wrench into the MCU.
- “Monday Morning Movie Review: Portly’s Top Ten Worst Films: #2: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)” – Speaking of overpowered female protagonists who never face any real adversity or hard choices, 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was a valiant, but ultimately stupid, effort to undo the damage done by its horrendous predecessor. Star Wars is now a dead franchise, destroyed over the course of two films what took decades to create.
Wow, a depressing mix of bad films this week. Maybe the worst films of all time—mine and Ponty’s respective #1 picks—next Sunday will ease the pain. Or just double down on it.
Well, sometimes to escape the crevasse, we must descend deeper into it. D’oh!
