TBT^2: Tarantulas and the Hygge

It’s the first day of autumn, which means things will be getting chilly in another month—or, given we’re in South Carolina, another two or three months. Regardless, we’ll all soon be cozying up with chili and blankets and sweaters.

Let’s hope, however, that our furry-legged arachnid friends, the burrowing tarantulas, don’t decide to cuddle up with us! Fortunately, that’s unlikely in these parts, as tarantulas are mostly kept as pet, and even that’s a pretty small niche of pet owners.

I stumbled upon today’s post back during the heat of the summer, when I was dreaming of the hygge (if not massive spiders), so I thought I’d reblog it to commemorate the start of all. It turns out that it was exactly six years ago today that I lost reblogged this piece. It seems that the “toothsome” Patricia is still making tarantula content, too; kudos to her for sticking with her niche and making something cool.

With that, here is 24 September 2020’s “TBT: Tarantulas and the Hygge“:

Lazy Sunday CLXX: Cozy Time

It’s still hot and humid here in South Carolina, but we’re tantalizingly close to the cozy season—the “hygge,” as our Danish friends call it.  In anticipation of autumnal coziness to come, I decided to look back some of the coziest posts TPP has to offer:

Here’s to a warm cup of coffee on a crisp autumnal day—tarantulas optional.

Happy Sunday!

TBT: Tarantulas and the Hygge

The weather in the mountains this past weekend was delightfully chilly, and it seems the cold up on Mount Mitchell has blown down into South Carolina.  In short, the weather is perfect—warm afternoons, and crisp, autumnal mornings.  I’ve been taking a cup of half-caff coffee in the afternoons after getting home from work and watering the garden, and it’s been glorious sitting on the porch and enjoying the coolness of the evening.

That first nip in the air is a sign that the hygge—the Danish concept of contented, warm coziness—is near.  It’s a time for bundling up and staying warm in old quilts with good books—and good company!  Food tastes better, coffee seems more satisfying, and my mind feels more alert and alive this time of year.

There’s also college football, which is nice, too—and Halloween!

So it seemed like a good time to look back to a post from March of this year, during South Carolina’s unusually cool—and long—spring.  This post, “Tarantulas and the Hygge,” explored what I called “the weird side of the Internet,” traveling “down one of those byways of oddity.”

Tarantulas and the Hygge

One of the joys of blogging is discovering the weird side of the Internet—the fun weird side, not the dark, inappropriate weird side.  Today’s post is a trip down one of those byways of oddity.

My blogger buddy photog posted a striking stack photography image a couple of weeks ago with the enigmatic title “Name That Tooth.”  He invited readers to identify a truly remarkable fang.

After studying the image for a few moments, I ventured a guess, which turned out to be correct:  it was the lethal, chitinous fang of the mighty tarantula.
