I always like to include a chorale on my various releases, and that includes on Advanced Funkification.  How do you write a funky chorale?  I’m not entirely sure, but this week’s installment of Open Mic Adventures demonstrates my attempt in the form of “Funk Chorale (Hymn to Funk)“:

“Funk Chorale (Hymn to Funk)” is a piece that attempts to combine the sixteenth-note syncopation of funk with the slower tempo and harmonic blending of my chorales. The result is a moving piece for mixed single reed quartet (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet).

While the subtitle of the piece is “(Hymn to Funk),” I want to be clear that I am dedicating this piece to the Glory of God, the Holy Trinity. I am not worshipping funk, which, while it sounds cool on the surface, would be absolutely absurd (and blasphemous).

Like last week’s feature on the title track from this album, I do not have a handwritten score for this piece, as I wrote it entirely in Noteflight.  However, you can view the full PDF score with your purchase of Advanced Funkification on Bandcamp.
