Is there any band more universally beloved than Journey? The arena rockers have enjoyed a staying power and universal appeal that not many other bands have. Sure, The Rolling Stones have been around forever with an intact lineup, but how often do you hear someone singing lustily along to one of their tunes? Put on “Don’t Stop Believin’” and everyone and their mother and her pet poodle will start crooning along.
So I dipped into the Great American Journey Songbook back on 23 August 2022 to give my rendition (in A major) of Journey’s classic tale of two-timin’, “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’“:
I’m a sucker for 6/8 time, so I particularly love this rollicking, fun Journey piece. It’s actually quite a sad song, but the jilted narrator gets his comeuppance in the end, when his floozy of a girlfriend is herself the victim of an unfaithful lover.
Of course, everyone loves the “Nah nah nah nah nah nah!” part at the end (on the recording, this section is sung eight times—talk about padding out the run time!). I tried my best to get folks singing along at the end:
I was also without a sustain pedal, which worked out well for this particular selection, which is constantly moving, with a nice little rhythm and blues bass line in the left hand.
