Last Friday, 1 March 2024, I released Epistemology, my latest collection of original compositions. I personally think it’s some of the best of my newer works.

This week, I thought I’d feature the title track of this epic release.
“Epistemology“—the title track from my latest release—is a suite for piano, clarinet, and bass clarinet. It explores several philosophical theories of epistemology–“how do we know what we know?”–through music.
It’s divided into seven sections:
I. The Skeptic
II. Observation
III. The Empiricist
IV. The Rationalist
V. The Idealist
VI. The Postmodernist
VII. Chorale of Truth
Six (6) being the number of man, I aligned it with the philosophical school most likely to lead us into relativistic error and confusion. Seven (7) being the number associated with God, I composed a chorale extolling Truth, which flows from God. The 3/4 sections in the chorale section were both a necessity of the rhythm I wanted and a reflection of the Holy Trinity.
Section II (“Observation”) is a short lead-in segment to Section III (“The Empiricist”). I wanted the grade-school numerology referenced in the previous paragraph to line up—ha!
The theme from “The Skeptic” repeats throughout the piece in various forms, moving through the ways of knowing until arriving at the Truth–consonant, resonant, and beautiful.

Happy Listening!

Haha, I read you loud and clear. It’s difficult to get out to open mic night during the school year. I’ll have some open mic content for you soon, though.
