Open Mic Adventures XLIV: “Skeleton Dance No. 1”

Ah, yes—another Tuesday, another edition of Open Mic Adventures in which I thwart Ponty’s dreams and feature a super short, experimental piano miniature instead of a gutsy, flabby live performance.

No worries—there will (probably) be more sweaty, robust live performances soon.  But as we endure the heat and misery of August, I’m already looking ahead to the coolness and fun of Halloween.

So, what better way to get in the spooky mood than with a little skeletal gyrating?

I composed this short piece, “Skeleton Dance No. 1,” one morning over coffee.  I had a little bit of staff paper left on a page of private music lesson notes, and I figured I’d jot something down.

The original intent was to write a little bass guitar riff in 7/8 time, and I will likely try playing this piece on bass at some point.  But I decided to try it on piano, and figured out the right-hand chords.

7/8 time is quite unusual, as the rhythm can be written in a number of ways.  I went for a 1-2-3 1-2 1-2 pattern, which gives it a disjointed feel, almost like skeletons attempting to reassemble themselves.

I’m not sure why this twenty-second video (only twelve seconds of which is the piece itself; the other eight seconds is the score) uploaded as a video as opposed to a YouTube “short,” but I imagine it has something to do with the aspect ratio.  I filmed the piece vertically (the aspect ratio for shorts), but edited it in the free iMovie app so I could include a scroll of the score.  That changed the aspect ratio (and cut my hands out of the recording, so it’s just me head-dancing chubbily to my own music), so that’s my guess as to why this uploaded as a regular video.  Honestly, I’d rather it be a “short,” as those tend to get more views.

Regardless, here’s the piece on YouTube:

And, always, here’s the score for those who wish to try playing it for themselves:

Skeleton Dance No. 1 Manuscript

As the title suggests, there will (eventually) be a “Skeleton Dance No. 2,” so stay tuned!

Happy Listening!
