Today’s piece is one of the first I wrote for The Galactic Menagerie, but somehow I neglected to upload it to YouTube until last week.  So here we are today with this whimsical piece about the largest non-mammalian sea creature (I think that’s true; please correct me in the comment section, my beloved trolls, if I am wrong):

“The Whale Shark” is a duet for two tubas. It depicts the graceful, slow swim of the majestic whale shark. This piece was among the first composed for The Galactic Menagerie, and was inspired by my neighbors’ trip to swim with whale sharks.

I had the idea for a tuba duet depicting the whale shark while teaching the young man whose mother had gone swimming with these majestic beasts.  I doodled a crude whale shark, then sometime after his lesson I jotted out (in hot pink!) the basic outline of the piece:

The family loved it, and it helped inspire the rest of The Galactic Menagerie.
