Open Mic Adventures XXXVI: “The Rings of Saturn” LIVE!

Okay, okay—I know I shared “The Rings of Saturnlast Tuesday.  However, I went out that Tuesday night to open mic night, and—with all humility—I knocked it out of the park.  As such, I had to share footage of this live performance.

I wrote about the piece in some detail last week, but I didn’t touch much on the themes.  The main idea I wanted to explore here was magnetism, or a kind of cosmic magnetic gravity (if that makes any kind of sense).  We have probably all felt that kind of irresistible, almost inexorable, tug of another person, or even of an idea or a concept.  It draws you in, and there’s not much you can do to resist.

The power of that gravitational attraction is potentially self-destructive (thus the link, “immolation so appealing”).  Of course, that could also be a positive form of destruction of the Self, such as surrendering one’s Self to a new identity in Christ (for instance).  I did not write this song as overtly Christian—its intent is far more basic and—gulp!—primal—but Christians will understand well the irresistible tug of the Holy Spirit.

Here’s the video uploaded to WordPress:

  1. Superb! 👏👏👏👏

Tina and I especially loved the guitar solo! 😂😂😂😂😂

This is your song? It’s brilliant!

Forgive me if you’ve already put it up but could you send me the sheet music for this? It’d be fun to see how I can translate that to guitar. Mine still needs repair but the other one should be ready to play.

    Thanks in advance. 👍

    • Hi Ponty,

Glad y’all liked it! And, yep! This is my song.

Unfortunately, I don’t have sheet music. However, I do have a lead sheet with chords and lyrics. I can e-mail that to you.

      I’ll send that along shortly.

      • Cheers. That’s just what I’ll need. I can learn it alongside yours – in terms of rhythm, changes, key, etc – and see what I can muster. If a miracle occurs and I manage to do it, I’ll see if I can upload it.

Yes, we loved the song! And sung, if I may say so, with typical Tyler panache! 😂😂😂

While you’re here, I must congratulate you…for surviving your book! On practically every page, you’re eating. Going through Myrtle Beach, you even stop for fries on your way to dinner! You’ve got some constitution, mate! Your brother too! 👍😂

        • Excellent! Hopefully the PDF went through and works for you. You might need to use a capo and transpose out of Bb major into something a bit more guitar-friendly, or you can just use a bunch of barre chords.

Thank you! And I’m glad y’all appreciated the guitar solo, haha!

HA! Thanks, man. Yes, I love to eat. My older brother runs marathons, so he deserves the food. Those fries before dinner were a bit much, but he’d run 26.2 miles (42 kilometers) that day, so he was famished. I’d just walked a few miles, haha.

If you enjoyed the book, feel free to leave a review on the Amazon UK page for the book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Arizonan-Sojourn-South-Carolinian-Dreams/dp/B0BYRKG9MW/
