Open Mic Adventures LVI: “Orange Roll”

I haven’t been able to compose quite as much lately as I’d like, but I had fun with a little 5/4 composition that I wrote on 8 November 2023.  It’s called “Orange Roll,” mainly because I wrote it with an orange gel pen, and I had fun playing around with the harmonies and variations on it.

Here’s the original “Orange Roll” in A minor:

Here’s the reharmonized version, which changes to a jazzy Dm9, ending on a A major:

To pad out my YouTube content schedule, I’ve combined the original “Orange Roll” and the reharmonized version into one video:

And here’s “Orange Roll” on bass:

Finally, here’s the score.  I wrote the harmonies on 13 November 2023, as I didn’t have time to sit down and play the piece for five days.  Yeesh!

  1. If you record the dm9 composition and play that under the A minor, you’ll get a moody Orange Roll with jazzy overtones! 😂

It’d be interesting to jumble up all your short compositions, using some underneath, some on the top and see what you get. I see a concert in the making! 👍😄

    • Hahaha, it would be a fun experiment! Some would fit together better than others, I suspect.

I just shelled out for a year of Noteflight Premium so I can start using its advance functionality again. I’ll mess around with plugging in “Orange Roll” at some point this week and trying the Dm7 against Am polychord and see what happens!

  2. I like some of the short compositions you did for Halloween. You can never go wrong with horror music on the piano. In fact, scary music invariably sounds great on the piano. I know it’s a long way off but I’m looking forward to hearing what’s in store next year. First up, Christmas! 👍
