After what was, perhaps, the most grueling school year I have ever endured, yours portly soon will be free.
Yes, dear readers, today—Wednesday, 29 May 2024—marks the last day of work before summer break. Yours portly will soon bask in the warm glow of near-limitless free time (for approximately two months).
Not that I’ll be slouching around (well, not the entire time, anyway)—and I’m not quite free from the authoritarian clutches of education. Next week I’ll begin the first of two sessions of my annual Minecraft Camp, a time-honored tradition to which I dedicate the first two weeks of June. Then I’ll whisk off to the dentist.
But once that is done, the only real obligations I’ll have will be to the few students who elect to take lessons during the summer. Otherwise, it’s church, family, Murphy, and Town Council.
One thing I have learned, however, is not to reveal to too many people that you have time off, because folks will come out of the woodwork to get you to help with whatever it is they’re doing. I don’t fully understand this impulse, as I’d much rather do a task alone than inconvenience everyone around me on their day off. Regardless, I’ve now spilled the beans to the entire Internet. Good thing only a few dozen people read this blog—ha!
But I digress. I’m looking forward to a summer of reading, blogging, writing, composing, playing music, napping, gaming, and the rest. I’ve already got two albums in the pipeline, releasing on 7 June and 7 July, respectively: Advanced Funkification and Heptadic Structure. I nearly have enough material at this point for another album, but I’m searching for my next theme. If you have any ideas, leave a comment!
For that matter, let me know what you would do with two months of mostly free time. Would you lounge like Goethe? Dance like everyone’s watching? Read a book? Let me know!

Enjoy your 60 days of freedom! What would I do? I retired in 2016 so it’s been a long 60 days…

I think your answer would be “starting a photography blog about Vegas and its environs.”

Thanks, AM! I’ve got to go sit in on some interviews in about an hour, but otherwise, I’m free as a bird (I’m not the one being interviewed, to be clear; I serve on Town Council in my little town here, and we’re interviewing for some positions this morning).

Haha, hopefully it’ll be quick! I’m hoping we can conduct the interviews and I can get on home. I’m looking forward to a long day of reading, writing, and gaming—God Willing!

If I had a 2 months break, a lot of that time would be in nature with one or two days a week lounging at home a week, or doing something at home.

So far I’ve spent a lot of the time doing things at home, but I am getting outside more. Last Friday I pulled out the grill and enjoyed some quiet time grilling lunch with my dog chilling by my side. Heaven!

That would have been nice. At least you were outside and relaxing for a bit.

Amen! It gets brutally hot here in South Carolina, so I have to take advantage of nice days when I can.

If it gets brutally hot, I hope you had some shade.

I was in a very shady spot beneath my overgrown azalea bush while grilling, haha. That same spot is sometimes directly in the sun, but at that time of day, it was perfect!
